@Donovan
I'm not sure that there's any point in the current national curriculum for ICT at all?

As for teachers, they'd have to be trained of course - the challenge being to write materials that teachers can understand ;^)
Another option is bringing in people from outside school - however I've no idea how this could be done as I'm not in Education. I will try and find out next month, though :-)

Thanks for the link. It would be great to talk further about what you're doing.

Interesting!!

Who teaches the teachers? My second subject at secondary level is ICT, I teach very little of it, none of which is coding. My degree involved a significant proportion of computer science including programming in Java, This is substantially more then the majority of ICT teachers who could only be classed as non-specialists, yet I would find the prospect of teaching coding a little worrying. How the non-specialists would cope must be a genuine concern?

Also how would coding fit into the current NC at both ks 2 & 3?

The nc for ict is a chore to teach and would certainly benefit from the challenge of coding for both teacher and student alike, but many ict teachers would be worried for the reasons stated previously.

Hi Richard, I have picked this debate up a little late, but hope I can still contribute! I am an ex ICT teacher and mum with a passion for teaching students programming concepts. I am no coder and have taught myself much over the past few years. I'm actually in the process of writing a series of free ebooks on the topic as part of my social enterprise, DoDigital, and would happily help where I can.
My favourites are Scratch & BYOB, Alice, Game Maker, App Inventor and Greenfoot.
All are easily accessible for students of all abilities (depending on age) and have been tried an tested by parents, teachers & students. The team at Computing at school are also really passionate about this and might be able to help. http://www.computingatschool.org.uk/

Not only did you have to learn, but you got a better keyboard with the Tandy, too :-)

When I was 12 I begged and pleaded with my folks to get me a ZX Spectrum for Christmas. They got me a Tandy TRS-80 instead. The games for it were so poor I had to learn BASIC so I could code my own. Best rubbish present ever.

So, I've set up
http://teachyourkidstocode.org/wiki/
& hope to find time to develop ideas there - but not alone.

I went to agricultural college, so am aware that I missed out on some key coding concepts that anyone who studied CS at University can bring to this. Please help us to develop something that can:
1. Enthuse kids about coding
2. Teach clear thinking & problem solving
3. Be the foundation for the next generation of programmers
Thanks :)
